Use Signals

Sig1 How to Use Railroad Signalslink

If you want to put more than one train on a railroad track, you have to use signals. Signals divide sections of track into blocks. Only one train can occupy a block at a time. But, a single train can be in mutiple blocks at the same time.

Signal typeslink

There are double signals and single signals available in Simutrans. Trains can pass through a double signal from both directions. Single signals limit a train to moving only in one direction. A train will move only towards the face of the signal, and will not move toward the dark side of a signal. The signal on the right hand side of the track (relative to the direction of travel of the train) controls the movement of the train.

1klick
Double Signal. Trains can pass through from either direction. Deadlocks are posible when more than one train needs to travel through this signal.

2klick
Single Signal (left direction). Trains can only travel in a SW direction through this signal. A train that need to go NE through this block will result in a "train can't find a route" message.

3klick
Single Signal (right direction). Trains can only travel in a NE direction through this signal. Remember than the signal on the right hand side controls the flow, and that a train won't go the wrong way through a one way signal.

Placing signalslink

  1. Select the signal building tool (by clicking the signal-icon in the rail-tools menu)
  2. Click on a rail

Altering signalslink

If you click an existing signal again with the signal building tool, the signal will be switched to another signal type, like shown below:
  1. Double Signal
  2. Single Signal (left direction)
  3. Single Signal (right direction)
