New: Simutrans Web Installer.

The simplest way to download and install Simutrans is using the Simutrans Web Installer (also called soosw). All you need to do is visit:

arrow http://setup.simutrans.com(external link)

There you can download a small package, and execute it according to the instructions it provides. This program will check the web for the most recent versions, and allow you to choose which components to install.

Note: This tool is still under development. Please report bugs and comments to it's developer.

What to download?

Simutrans is split up into an executable file and various graphics sets. The most common ones are the 64-pak and the 128-pak. The different pak versions do not only differ in resolution, but also in graphics style and gameplay. The numbers 64 and 128 refer to the pixel width of a game tile. Other pak sets are usually not complete, and will require one of these two standard paks to work.

There is no installation required - simply download the executable and one or more pak sets the same folder. You will need at least one executable file, and at least one graphics set. If you have downloaded multiple paks (in particular, the 64-pak and 128-pak), please note that there are some duplicated files. Extract the one you're more interested last, and allow it to overwrite any files...

available files for version 88.00

So for version 88.00 you might for example want to download the Windows GDI executable simuwin-88-00.zip and the basic 64-pak set simupak64-88-00.zip.

System Requirements

Simutrans is based on a game first produced in 1993, so the system requirements are very low. However, a faster machine can produce better results later in the game. The following are the recommended requirements.

Windows: Pentium and up should go. You can change some settings to make the game run more smoothly, if it feels too slow on your computer.

Linux: Probably about the same.
